How To Make A Vanity Desk

Vanity desks provide a convenient and stylish space to get ready for the day or wind down at night. They typically feature a mirror, drawers, and compartments for storing makeup, skincare products, and other essentials. Building your own vanity desk can be a fun and rewarding project, even if you don't have extensive woodworking experience.

Here's a step-by-step guide to help you create your own custom vanity desk:

Materials You'll Need

  • 3/4-inch plywood or MDF
  • 1x4 pine boards
  • 1x6 pine boards
  • 1x8 pine boards
  • Mirror
  • Drawers
  • Knobs or pulls
  • Paint or stain
  • Wood glue
  • Screws
  • Nails

Tools You'll Need

  • Circular saw
  • Miter saw
  • Drill
  • Countersink bit
  • Pocket hole jig
  • Clamps
  • Sandpaper

Step 1: Cut the Plywood or MDF

Start by cutting the plywood or MDF to the desired size and shape of the vanity desk. The size will depend on the available space and your personal preferences. For a basic vanity desk, a rectangle or square shape measuring about 48 inches wide by 30 inches deep is a good starting point.

Step 2: Build the Frame

Using the 1x4 pine boards, build the frame for the vanity desk. Cut the boards to the desired length and assemble them using wood glue and screws. The frame should be the same size as the plywood or MDF top.

Step 3: Attach the Plywood or MDF Top

Place the plywood or MDF top on the frame and secure it with wood glue and screws. Make sure the top is flush with the edges of the frame.

Step 4: Build the Drawers

If you're adding drawers to your vanity desk, build them now. Cut the drawer sides, front, and back from 1x6 pine boards. Assemble the drawers using wood glue and pocket holes.

Step 5: Install the Drawers

Install the drawers in the vanity desk frame using drawer slides. Make sure the drawers slide smoothly and are aligned properly.

Step 6: Install the Mirror

Cut the mirror to the desired size and shape. Attach the mirror to the vanity desk using mirror clips or adhesive.

Step 7: Add Knobs or Pulls

Add knobs or pulls to the drawers and cabinet doors for easy opening. Use a countersink bit to create a recess for the screws so that they are flush with the surface.

Step 8: Paint or Stain

Finally, paint or stain the vanity desk to your desired color. Allow the paint or stain to dry completely before using the desk.
