How To Replace Bathroom Vanity Light

Replacing a bathroom vanity light is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a few hours. By following these step-by-step instructions, you can safely and easily update the lighting in your bathroom.

Materials and Tools Needed:

  • New vanity light fixture
  • Screwdriver
  • Wire cutters
  • Electrical tape
  • Safety glasses

Step 1: Safety First

Before you begin, turn off the power to the vanity light at the circuit breaker or fuse box. This will prevent you from being electrocuted while working on the light fixture.

Step 2: Remove the Old Light Fixture

Once the power is off, use a screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the old vanity light fixture in place. Carefully pull the fixture away from the wall, being careful not to damage the wires.

Step 3: Disconnect the Wires

Use wire cutters to cut the wires that connect the old vanity light fixture to the electrical wires in the wall. Be sure to leave enough wire so that you can easily reconnect them to the new fixture.

Step 4: Connect the New Light Fixture

Strip about 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of the wires on the new vanity light fixture. Twist the bare wires together with the corresponding wires from the wall, making sure that the black wires are connected to the black wires and the white wires are connected to the white wires. Wrap electrical tape around the connections to secure them.

Step 5: Mount the New Light Fixture

Position the new vanity light fixture against the wall and secure it with the screws that you removed in Step 2. Make sure that the fixture is level and that the wires are not pinched.

Step 6: Turn on the Power

Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker or fuse box. Test the new vanity light fixture to make sure that it is working properly.

Tips:

  • If you are not comfortable working with electricity, hire a qualified electrician to replace the vanity light fixture for you.
  • Be sure to choose a new vanity light fixture that is the same size as the old one. This will ensure that it fits properly and that the wires are long enough to reach the electrical wires in the wall.
  • If you are replacing a fluorescent vanity light fixture with an LED fixture, you may need to purchase a new dimmer switch.
